In 1967, the 196th ASHC deployed to Camp Lane or Lane Army Airfield in Vietnam. My friend, Jim Gavin, sent me these photos of the air field.
As with contractors that I experienced in Iraq, operations in Vietnam used local populations to perform routine tasks like laundry for the Soldiers. These “Hooch Maids” didn’t have the advantages of the massive laundry facilities that we had in Iraq, they used the water from the shower room and pans.
In an effort to find more information about Lane AAF, I found a Google Earth Map of the US Bases in Vietnam. And some more photos of Lane AAF from 1968-1972. There I as able to see the location and satellite views of Camp Lane as it looks now. It is interesting to see the satellite views of the place where my father spent a year of his life.

Hello to all. I severed as engine mechanic for 196 ASHC Dec. 1969 to Nov. 1970.
Donaldson, O’keefe are a few names I’ve recognized. I’m in touch with Stone machinist who served about the same time.
Like to hear from you guys who were there. I have a lot of stores about Chu Lai. At Lane a group would paint our Blue flipper on the bottom of visiting hooks,

Pictures of Lane AAF brought back many memories. I flew Chinooks out of Lane ( Flipper call sign) from May 1968 to May 1969. The Warrant Officers even had our own jeep called “WOPA 1) Don’t remember if it was assigned, donated or stolen….knowing warrants it was probably stolen:)
Living conditions weren’t too bad when you look at what a lot of pilots and crews had to deal with.
