In my stash of donated comics, I found a copy of “World’s Finest Comics: Starring Superman and Batman” Number 288. I was surprised how “chummy” Batman was with Superman. Then I focused on the story.
Batman was placed under “super-hyptnosis” and indwelt by some spirit-thing, I had a hard time figuring this one out. Batman relives the death of his parents and then he is cloned. You would think that all of this would be enough to totally mess up one’s psyche. But not Batman. Check this dialogue out:
Superman: I guess the Adored One’s gone back to his own dimension, Batman…and the duplicates of you blew up too! He used the Zodiac idol to create the Evil Madame Zodiac, so I guess it was somehow immune to his–
Batman: Superman?
Superman: Yes, Batman?
Batman: I’m bone-tired and for once, I’d rather save the explanations for later. How about a cup of coffee?
Superman: Sounds fine, Old Friend. I take mine–
Batman: I know– with creme and sugar.
Superman: Right.
Ok, so Batman is a big tough superhero, but he has issues. Who gets their brain and emotions sucked out , eats the bad guys, and then goes for a cup of coffee?
Batman is a human–just like you and me. Doesn’t this get to him once and awhile? Maybe that is why he has gotten bitter over the last several years. He has some very big issues–he can afford a good psychologist, why doesn’t he get one? I guess that it is easier to just go and get a cup of coffee.
