The Bible says; “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4, ESV) This truth is self-evident—when you delight in Jesus; Jesus will give you more of himself.
I hear motivational speakers all of the time tell audiences “Do what makes you happy!” And to some degree this is good advice—to pursue that which you enjoy and pour yourself into that. The problem is that, many times, we don’t know what makes us happy. I talk to Soldiers who are trying to figure out what makes them happy. The Bible says that we are to “delight in the Lord.” It is then that he will give us those desires. There are no preconditions or outside motivations-we must simply delight in him.
Too many times, we pray for our heart’s desire and then wonder why God did not bless it. In truth, when we do this we are getting the cart before the house and desiring (or lusting) over something, anything, that is not meant to be the desire of our heart. Jesus is to be the desire of our heart. I see this linked to the first commandment to love God. God doesn’t want to be second; he wants to be the delight of our heart. Then, through his wisdom, he will point the way to our desires because they all fall within God’s perfect plan. So, discover what way you may delight yourself in the Lord and find a way to share that delight with others.
