In 1963-1967, there was a TV show called, The Fugitive. It was also turned into a very good movie in 1993. The plot of the movie centers around Dr. Richard Kimball. Dr. Kimball is running from the police because they think he killed his wife. The truth, however, is that a “one armed man” committed the murder and Dr. Kimball is searching to find him, while being chased by the police. When I saw this clipping, I thought about that TV show. To be fair, Mr. O.L. Beans was probably a very nice man who was just driving too fast, but the thought did cross my mind that he was driving away from the scene of the crime with Dr. Kimball on his trail. This imaginative situation surely explains the speeding ticket, right?
What is truly interesting to me, however, is the fact that Mr. O.L. Beans—structural iron worker from Cleveland—made the front page! The Pittsburg Press claimed underneath its title that the newspaper had the “Largest Daily and Sunday circulation of All Pittsburg Newspapers”, so it is interesting that a speeding ticket made the front page. As an added bonus, Mr. Beans was arrested for his heavy foot. He was only driving 30 miles per hour and received a $10 fine. I think the front page news would be more devastating to the man than the $10—but $10 went a lot farther back then.
