While I have not seen the new movie Superman versus Batman, I am very familiar with the character of Batman. When Batman was a boy, he watched his parents mugged and killed in front of him. He was raised by his butler, Alfred. Central to the story of Batman is his loneliness. First, from the loss of his parents. Secondly, from the double life that he has been forced to live. Batman has many friends around him and there are many people that look up to him, but he remains lonely. It never seems as if he ever will break free of the emptiness that is in his heart.
Most of us, do not spend our nights running around solving mysteries and fighting crime. However, most of us can relate to feeling of loneliness. Loneliness leaves an empty feeling in our lives that only a deep relationship can fill. Many look to fill this with money, sex, or power but they continue to come up empty. All of us long for that feeling and some spend their whole lives searching for it.
In Hebrews chapter 13, the Bible tells us to “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5 ESV) Let us not pursue filling our emptiness with money or other things—they do not fill that void! But, we must remember the words of Christ who said “I will never leave you or forsake you.”
What a wonderful promise to have! When we place our faith in Christ, we need not be lonely again, because he will not leave us. Thank God today for this promise and trust in Him to fill that emptiness today!
