In comic books, it seems as though characters died and come back to life in many different ways. On the forth disc of Justice League Season Two, the disc begins with “Hereafter: Part One and Two”. Which is where I found this typo; “Hereafter” is listed on Disc Three and “Secret Society” on Disc Four. The first episode is a great “death of Superman” story with Toyman doing the honors. The second part takes place thirty thousand years in the future. 30,000? I am sure that is what they said. The picture is what happens to the Earth when Superman is dead.
I remember in the 80’s, DC had a major story line of Doomsday killed Superman. I haven’t read it in a long time, so if is tough to remember. However, the idea of a world without Superman is interesting to me. Amazingly, Superman is the only character that we care about whether he lives or dies. The question we ask is “What if Superman died?” Superman is the only character that we care to ask that question of.
We care if Spiderman died. We do not care if Wonder Woman dies. We do not care about Wolverine. Nor do we care if Batman dies. The fans would be upset but would it would not attract that much attention. I know people that stopped reading comic books after they killed Superman–they distrusted the writers as greedy and selfish. I remember that I first heard about his death from watching the NBC Nightly News. But, would we care if any other character died? No. Superman is the greatest.
One question still remains; What would the world be like without him? I hope we never find out.
