Several weeks ago, I began to run at 5AM. At first, I was reluctant to run that early because I didn’t want to go out so early while it was dark. But, after a while I got used to it. It was in the warmed weather so, I could dress lightly with brightly colored shirts and even a reflective belt to make sure I was seen. Then the weather became cooler, I realized that all of my winter weather running gear is black or dark colors. I’m not sure why that is—but I suspect that dark was the only option available when I bought them. In all fairness, I didn’t run in winter gear very much in El Paso, so the gear is about three years old. When I went to Target to pick out some new gear for this running season in Kansas, I was very pleased to see how reflective the gear is. I wear Champion C9 Running Clothes from Target.
All of my new gear, hat, shirt, pants all come with a tag that said “Be Seen at Night” and emphasized the reflective quality of the materials. This is a big deal. I would be happy if I lit up like a Christmas tree when I passed headlights if it were possible. The newer gear has reflective strips, brighter colors, and reflective material. This is very comforting to have when I make those early runs. I am happy that this seems to be a trend in running clothes, so look for it when you are buying new running clothes for the winter.
