I have been pretty excited about a piece of junk food that suddenly has repeatedly bounced back into my life. It is no surprise to those who know me back in the states that I enjoy corn dogs. As a matter of fact, people probably don’t think of it that often because they are so common in the U.S.
Travel to Korea, corn dogs are suddenly not that common. There are no Sonic 50 cent corn dog days, or “Hot Dog of a Stick” restaurants. In fact, our commissary went through a period where they did not have any corn dogs for sale for about a month or two. I last was able to have a corn dog when I saw one at the zoo about a month ago. Needless to say, corn dogs have become one of the strange items I began to miss over here.
On Saturday, I went for a walk to eat lunch in the city of Uijeongbu. I hopped on the train and went to the end of the line, where I got off to see what I could find. By the time I got off the train, I was quite hungry. As I walked, I saw a little shop that sold chicken-sticks and corn dogs. So, I walked up and pointed to the corn dogs and said one. The store keeper smiled and placed a corn dog in hot oil. When the corn dog was ready he offered to put ketchup on, but I declined. It was a wonderful snack to carry me over until I found a bigger meal.
Now, I know where to find great corn dogs if I’m ever craving them again.
