Christmas is always a unique time of the year. It seems as if, for a day, a week, or a year the cares or concerns of the world are put away. And, if they are not completely put away, most are tolerated for a short period. Christmas is a state of mid to endure and to love one another. In many ways, Christmas is a call to act like Christ, if even it is for only a day.
Peter Marshall wrote in a prayer during Christmas, and included in the book “The Prayers of Peter Marshall” by his wife Catherine Marshall;
“May the lovingkindness of Christmas not only creep into our hearts, but there abide, so that not even the return to earthly cares and responsibilities, not all the festivities of our own devising may cause it to creep away weeping. May the joy and the spirit of Christmas stay with us now and forever.”
He prays that we would not be confined to living a life of loving, peacefulness, and kindness forward from the day of Christmas. But, for most times we are like “a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror…and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.” (James 1:24b, ESV) We tend to leave it alone until next December.
We need to make the Christmas spirit a part of our lives. We need to adopt a constant attitude of love, kindness, and peace to the world around us.
As you explore your world, continue to look for those ways to extend kindness to other. To bring peace. To bring love. Christmas is a call to act like Christ, so today and tomorrow, and the next day continue to follow Him.
