I was talking to my Bible Study group last night about my devotional times I have each morning, so I thought I would also share it with you.
Right now, I am reading passages selected from the Book of Common Prayer. Now, the copy that I own is the 1928 version, which is my preference–it was a hand-me down from my father, and I refer to it often. My readings, however, are from the 1979 version, because of the format I have access to.Â
One of the problems with the Book of Common Prayer is that it seems as if you must use an abacus to figure out what is the reading of the day. Because of the calendar it is based on, it involves understanding the church calendar and the weeks after Easter, Advent, and Trinity. I made a chart, earlier this year, to find the reading from the 1928 version, but it was cumbersome to flip through several charts to make sure I was on the right day. So, I did what seemed reasonable to me–I googled. I searched the web time find a chart or listing of the readings so I could print them out.
I found The Online Book of Common Prayer. On the online BCP, there is a listing of all of the daily scriptural readings (Daily Office Lectionary List),  that I printed out. I printed it two pages per printed page and folded the print out in half. This list is based on the Church Calender, but references the Standard Calender as well–so it is easy to follow. My eyes are opened continually by reading the passages that are highlighted each day.
I also read a portion from Oswald Chamber’s My Utmost for His Highest. As well as some other books that I have stacked up on my desk. Sometimes, I simply listen to some hymns on my iPod or just sit and be quiet and pray.
There is no “correct” way to meet with God. This is what works for me right now. It is simply important that we meet with God.
