“I am a Southern Baptist. For the top of my head to the bottom of my toes. I am a Southern Baptist,” as Adrian Rogers once said. And I would say the same thing.
I am also an Army Chaplain who supports the Constitution which states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”Â
Now, historically, it was the Baptists who were the proponents of the Freedom of Religion concept. The Baptist Faith and Message states in its statement concerning Religious Liberty:
The state owes to every church protection and full freedom in the pursuit of its spiritual ends. In providing for such freedom no ecclesiastical group or denomination should be favored by the state more than others.
So how does this fit together? It fits together by Cooperation without Compromise. Concerning this, The Baptist Faith and Message states:
Cooperation is desirable between the various Christian denominations, when the end to be attained is itself justified, and when such cooperation involves no violation of conscience or compromise of loyalty to Christ and His Word as revealed in the New Testament.
Specifically, the statement expresses cooperation between Christian denominations. But in the section titled “The Christian and Social Order” the statment states:
Every Christian should seek to bring industry, government, and society as a whole under the sway of the principles of righteousness, truth, and brotherly love. In order to promote these ends Christians should be ready to work with all men of good will in any good cause, always being careful to act in the spirit of love without compromising their loyalty to Christ and His truth.
This is what happens as an Army Chaplain. Do I offer prayers in a Muslin service? No. Jewish Service? No. Pagan and/or Wiccan Service? No.  Nor would they want me to, any more than I would want one of them to lead the worship in my Christian Services. But, I happily cooperate. It is the right thing to do. Supporting the religious liberty of others ensures the lasting religious liberty for ourselves.
I am happy, upon request, to coordinate a service of any faith, provide a place for them to meet, and, if possible, find somebody to lead it. This is how I cooperate.
All without compromise. I don’t violate my beliefs. I speak what God places in my heart to say, I teach what I know to be true, and I don’t back down when questioned.
…always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you;(1 Peter 3:15b, ESV)
After all, I am a Southern Baptist from the top of my head to the bottom of my toes.
