Yesterday during a visit to the El Paso Museum of Art, our guide was discussing a particular painting that was a “Devotional painting”. We don’t think much of devotional art much these days. Oftentimes, we don’t even consider art at all.
But what about devotional art? The painting we were discussing was to be placed in a home for the family to tell the story of Christ. But what about art as personal devotional practice? Many times, we discuss journaling–and I certainly advocate spiritual journaling as a regular devotional practice. But what about taking time to express your faith through art. What about telling a Bible story through a painting? What about sketching out your devotion to Christ?
The above sketch is just that. Siting in my truck waiting for a formation, I sketched out a picture of Christ on the cross. Thinking about the people there. Thinking about the dark day of the Crucifixion. In the few moments I spent in this devotional sketch, I grew in my faith as I visualized the cross. I hope to make this a regular practice in my faith.
