Living in El Paso has afforded me many opportunities to hike. Nearby my home is the Franklin Mountains State Park which offers over 24,000 acres of wilderness within the city limits—the nation’s largest within city limits. When I go, I need to prepare for terrain dangers, sun dangers, and hydration dangers. There also other threats like getting lost, surprise storms, and injury that are also important considerations.
I pack my small amount of gear in an inexpensive BCG Hydration Pack from Academy Sports. It is an excellent pack to bring along the right amount of gear. In addition to the gear, I have brought along at different times a DSLR Camera or a set of Nikon Binoculars inside the pack as well.
One modification that I made to the pack was the water bladder inside. The pack comes with a water bladder, but I think this is where they cut costs. I bought a Camelback bladder to go inside. Because of the heat and dryness of this area, I need the full 3 litters that the pack will hold.
Inside the pack, I pack:
First Aid Kit
Sunscreen
Snacks—the Granola Bars stay in a pocket, but many times I also bring my lunch in addition.
Whistle—you never know when you may take a wrong turn. Many times the desert begins to look the same, I understand getting turned around.
Reflective Belt—in case I get stuck unplanned outside after dark
Compass—again, in case I get lost. I try to always follow the trail, I also stay prepared.
Matches
Flashlight
A Rain poncho—I have two, because sometimes I hike with my son.
I also makes sure I wear my Sun Hat from Columbia, I found out after one hike that I would be needing that out in the desert. It keeps me cool, but it also helps me not get sunburned.
I hike with Black Diamond Trekking Poles, that I would never leave the house on a hike without. Before I bought them, they seemed like a novelty, but now after a couple of years of use, I don’t think I could make it without them.
I love hiking. It is a top choice for cross-training for running for me, but it is also a great way to get outside and enjoy nature. I hope this list will be helpful for you as you put your pack together for your next day hike!
