For years, in addition to baseball, I’ve enjoyed watching NASCAR. Because of the racing season being longer than the baseball season, and depending on the television coverage, there have been times that I paid more attention to NASCAR. One of those times was when we lived in Virginia.
The kids were smaller and I would spend some of those Sunday afternoons watching the race. I would listen to them on the radio on my way home from my duties at Fort Lee and watch them finish up. The children watched along with me; it was a wonderful time! So, somewhere along the way, I picked up a Jeff Gordon DuPont Motor Sports hat.
Since the 1990’s while I was seminary, I have been a Jeff Gordon fan. I’ve always respected him as a person and his racing style. So, it was fitting to get this hat. During the time of watching with the kids, I was able to convince one of my daughters to support Jeff Gordon but her twin sister chose Jimmy Johnson—because every time we watched, it seemed, he won. My son, Will, simply liked the M&M car…because he likes M&M’s.
We moved to Texas after that and the time zone changed as did the pace on Sunday afternoon. We slowly got out of the habit of watching. Every now and then, we think back on those days. This hat is always a great reminder of those times that we sat and watched the races as a family.
