While running with my daughter tonight, we were talking about how, at the homeschool co-op, she had learned about Ben Franklin and how he flew a kite into the sky. The kite of course was struck by lightning and I talked about how he discovered electricity. I began to think aloud about what life would be like without electricity.
Life without electricity would be very different. In Ben Franklin’s day, everything was light by lanterns. They had books, but they would have to read them by the light of lanterns. Each house had a fire place where they would heat their homes.
I thought more about this as I ran. It is amazing how far we have come since that day Franklin discovered electricity only about 250 years ago.
Without electricity there would be no lights, central heating, or air conditioning. There would be no television, radio, or computers. There would be no refrigerators, coffee makers, or video games. No dish washers, laundry machines, or dryers. There would be no hair dryers. There would be no microwaves.
I am amazed when I think of all they gadgets and tools that we depend run on electricity.
Sometimes we take electricity for granted. And it has become commonplace, so this is understandable. However, ow would we live if it were taken away.
Even for a moment?
How would our lives change? Would our priorities change?
Our lives would certainly change. But, would it be for the better? Or are we addicted to the convience and the distractions that electricity brings with it?
