One of my favorite sandwiches is Grilled Cheese. Grilled Cheese is best served after being cooked on a griddle with butter and thick cheddar cheese. For extra credit, I discovered it is even better when a hamburger patty is added! It may sound trivial, but one of my favorite things to get at the Dinning Facility while deployed was the occasional grilled cheese.
But, what happens if you don’t have a griddle…or cannot use it if you did?
That is when I turn to my trusted microwave grilled cheese for faster service.
Growing up—before the microwave—we made grilled cheese with the toaster oven. We would toast the bread on the “top only” setting. Butter the toasted sides and place the cheese between those toasted sides, butter the top of the sandwich, and toast the whole sandwich. It was a wonderful lunch!!
Then, the microwave came along and the procedures had to change. While I still love the toaster oven, there is no more room on the counter.
The new microwave grilled cheese directions are as follows:
Toast two pieces of bread.
Butter the tops of the bread.
Place the cheese in between the buttered pieces. Typically, I use Kraft Singles.
Butter the top.
Microwave for 15 seconds to makes sure butter and cheese is melted.
It doesn’t take long to fix and it is probably not very good for you, but it is a treat that I always enjoy. One special note is that this sandwich is paired wonderfully with Chicken Noodle Soup in the winter.
