Detective Comics 826 was a great example of a successful one-shot. I don’t know if it is officially a “one-shot” because I think it fits in with a continuous series, but that would make it even better.
So many of the stories written are left wide open to conclude with the next issue. This issue fits in a storyline that is being developed while it demonstrates a solid beginning and ending. The story was short enough to fit into the book and detailed enough not to short change the reader. The writer also didn’t make the characters too numerous, keeping the story simple.
“Slayride” was a fun break from all the series that are ongoing.
