A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a post about classified ads. It was through some comments that I was introduced to craigzoom.com. But, it was through this post that I was reminded of The Thrifty Nickel.
The Thrifty Nickel is a little newspaper, that–I think–is free and found at gas stations and restaurants. Sometimes, there are similar newsprint classified ad books by different companies in different parts of the country. They are all localized with stuff for sale in that area. It is fun to see which cars are for sale, which street is having the best yard sale, and who has free kittens.
Now what would I want with that? What would any Soldier want with this?
Short answer: A touch of home.
We aren’t going to be buying cars from the locals or picking up the lastest gently used, slightly weathered swing set. (That happened to be featured on America’s Funniest Home Videos. But, it would be nice to want to.
These are the little things that keep us going and these touches of home bring hope. The little things that we can hope to do, brings enjoyment and conversation. It is window shopping at its best.
So for that Soldier in your home town–send him or her a copy of The Thrifty Nickel.

Funny you should mention the Thrifty Nickel. I am looking through one RIGHT NOW for my sister. She’s looking for a used car. 😉
