More and more, I am finding time to read. It is a habit that must be carved into you schedule and forced. Otherwise, the business of life creeps into that slice of time–after all “you can always read later”. But, later never comes.
This year, I was able to read or listen to several books. my top three books are as follows;
The best leadership book was “It Worked for Me” by Colin Powell. This is a great book, particularly for Soldiers. I recommend it often to young lieutenants. The principles inside are timeless, but the application of these principles are set in an Army culture. Colin Powell has written several books on different topics about his life or work–but this one focuses on those skills that brought him to be where he is now.
My favorite fiction book of the year is “Tilt A Whirl” by Chris Grabenstein. This fun mystery was a quick read for me, but maybe that is because it was so enjoyable. It is the first book of a series of books based on carnival rides.
And ten my third favorite book of the year, was a psychology book about Habits. “The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business” by Charles Duhigg is one book that I still think about often even after reading it several months ago. Reflecting on how habits are formed and broken is a topic that is incredibly interesting. The author did a wonderful job conveying his excitement and knowledge of the subject in a way that wasn’t over my head.
These are just three of the books that I have read this year. I fully recommend them and I can’t wait to read more great books for 2014.
