After a great day of exploring the downtown shops of Leavenworth, Kansas yesterday we stopped in for a bite to eat at Homer’s Drive Inn.
Homer’s was established in 1931 “serving nickel mugs of root beer from a wooden stand at the corner of Broadway and Cherokee Streets” in downtown Leavenworth. Founder, Homer McKelvey “employed men dressed in long-sleeved shirts and ties as car hops to customers driving Model Ts.” He moved his stand to the present location in 1933, and moved once more to build the present building in 1938. Only remodeling once in 1968, the restaurant still stands as a wonderful little stop in Leavenworth.
I ordered a cheeseburger that was wonderful. It was a simple meal cooked well. Many times restaurants, in their attempt to stand out, add to many things by adding extras when all that is really wanted is a cheeseburger. It was very good and something I will look forward to enjoying again.
My son ordered a kid’s meal hot dog which was delightful! The kid’s meal comes with smiley face fries, which the kids loved. The hot dog came in a hamburger bun, sliced and grilled. This interesting twist made the lunch fun for him—as well as giving me a new idea for my next hot dog!
The trip to Homer’s Drive Inn was enjoyable. We arrived after the lunch rush and the drive inn was somewhat quiet with steady traffic. This restaurant is already on our recommended list of restaurants to return to over the next year.

My son and I had many “milkshake dates” there when we lived in Levenworth. Little thing but great shakes and fabulous memories.
