It is not often that I have time to cut up fruit for my cereal—many times that is the last thing on my mind before I head out the door. I do enjoy my cereal topped off with blueberries, peaches, strawberries or bananas. It adds an extra feeling of “healthy” and sweetness to the Special K or Corn Flakes. But, please make them fresh fruit.
Last year, I watched as Monica pulled out a box of Special K with Strawberries. The box looks great and fresh and delicious. What I found inside was inside was dried strawberry chunks. Another time, there was a cereal with Blueberries. I wonder how they suggest that we bring these dried cardboard to life. Do we allow the cereal to soak until it is all soggy to make sure the dried strawberries are strawberries again? The last thing I want in my cereal is freeze dried fruit. It reminds me of the time when the Army MRE has dried peaches (just add water). There was a joke that if you ate the peaches dry and then drank water, then they would explode in your stomach. I think that it is the same with the strawberries.
Now, I know that this is a trend and one day—soon, I hope, it will go away. And the card board flavored fruit bits will be gone from cereal land for good. So whatever you do, spare me the dried fruit. I’ll take the fresh fruit on my cereal.
