Over the last couple of days, I have been preparing our garden beds with flowers so the house may look a little more inviting and a little bit more like a home. The gardening has also provided some time to spend with the children as they have helped me weed, dig, and plant. After a visit to Home Depot, we brought home some Impatiens to put in the flower bed. After placing them in the garden, I discovered that I had bought too many. That was when I cam up with an idea to create a Clementine Flower Box.
Our children love to eat the oranges called “Clementines”. These little oranges come in a small wooden box as their packaging. These little boxes are often used to store tools or toys, but many times, they are probably thrown away. With our left over plants, I was able to take one box and create a small flower box.
I first took the small box and laid a half sheet paper towel on the bottom to hold in the dirt. The box has about an inch wide opening where the potting soil could easily fall out. Covering that bottom with a paper towel provides a biodegradable and porous layer to hold the soil in as you put the box together. Second, I took a small bag of potting soil and filled the box full of the dirt. Finally, I planted the little Impatiens into the box. It was that simple and I was able to use a Clementine box rather than letting it go into the landfill or into my garage.

Great idea of getting gardening joy in an succinct and miniature form.
