Each morning after I wake up, and before leaving for our 0630 Physical Training (PT) Formation, I spend about an hour in prayer and Bible study. This first hour is the key to my focus and resilience during my unaccompanied tour in Korea. Each day, after pouring a cup of tea. I sit down and open my Bible to the passage of the day in the Bible Reading Guide from American Bible Society. This Bible Reading Guide is a strong Bible Reading program that incorporates a wide selection of the scriptures into digestible bites for reading.
I still remember looking through website after website to find a Bible reading program that was suited for me. When I found this free guide, it has given me a flexible and purposeful direction of Bible Reading for each day.
I found the Bible Guide helpful because it is a themed Bible reading plan focused on a yearly theme. Additionally, I noticed that there are various subthemes throughout the year. This brings a sense of continuity to each day’s reading and constituency in the type of scripture being listed for each day. As much as I enjoyed the 2016 theme of “God’s Living Word”, I am also looking forward to 2017’s theme of “God’s Faithful Word”.
For me, one of the big selling points of this plan is the passage length. The passages are just long enough to get the point across, but not too long that it is impossible to complete in a compressed time period. I have found that if I do not read and pray before PT, I will not have time again until the next day—I would suspect you have the same problem.
There are many different programs to read the Bible. This is one that I use and I believe in. If you have a plan that you like, stick with it. The main goal of any plan is that people will read and apply the Bible, not on the plan to use. However, if you do not have a Bible Reading plan, I encourage you to download your own free PDF copy of the 2017 Bible Reading Guide from American Bible Society available right here and use it every day.

Scott–
Thank you for reading and checking in! The plan is very simple and not time consuming–it gives just enough. I’ve been very impressed with it! Happy reading!

Thanks for this Keith. I am challenging myself to read the Bible every day in 2017 and will use this guide. I will read from the NLT partly because it seems easier to read at the early hour I plan to read (before 6:30), and partly because I’ve never read from that one before. Looking forward to the challenge!
