This will get a little confusing but, hang on. In the Star and Stripes on Friday, the paper carried Andrew A. Smith’s column about Heidi MacDonald’sarticle in Publisher’s Weekly. MacDonald’s article was about the Internet and the comic industry. The part that caught my attention was “Comic Book Piracy”.
I was actually shocked at the thought, first of all–because that is the first I had heard about it–with my head in the sand and all. But, it simply did not make sense for these people to scan each page of these comic books then pass them around. And, of course, be read by a apparently large number of jerks that are too cheep to buy them for themselves. I don’t can what their “Good” excuse is for downloading is but it is wrong. It is against the law and it is immoral. Basically, yes–they should be ashamed of themselves.
But, beyond that–it doesn’t make sense. It does explain Marvel’s need to put something in digital form–and I hope DC is to follow. But, I have a hard time with the desire to read comics on a computer, much less a pdf copy of one. Comic books should be read as books–with paper and everything. Yes, I may use the Marvel digital service if it is not blocked downrange–but that is the only way I would be getting my “fix” and would be happy to pay for it. It makes sense to pay for it–they are there to make money.
Oh, by the way–these rules for not reading pirated comics, also applies to reading the paper books at the store with out buying them. Parents teach your children that this is just as wrong.

Thank you for asking…I started my comic book collection with Superman (see “How I Got Started Collecting Comics), so I still have a large interest in the Man of Steel. Right now, my favorite titles are Catwoman, Batman, and Superman. On the Marvel side, I really like Spider-man, Fantastic Four, and Daredevil. I have a hard time picking just one.
