On my way to Fort Leavenworth, I listened to the audible.com version of “I, Justine: An Analog Memoir” through my audible.com account. I listen to many books this way, and many times, I recommend reading or listening according to preference—but this case I definitely would recommend the audible version! It is great to hear the author, Justine Ezarik, tell her own story—she does a wonderful job and her familiar voice and tone—as well as her sincerity comes through clearly.
“I, Justine” is the story of Justine Ezarik’s rise to internet stardom. I have been watching her YouTube videos for a couple of years. I was never a “watch videos on the computer” guy—but once we welcomed a Roku into our home, I watch them every time she posts a new one. So, when she mentioned that she would be publishing a book, I was sure to pick it up, and the trip to Leavenworth from El Paso was a great time to listen to the entire production. (I was actually one hour short due to some travel challenges but I finished it up today!)
I was very impressed by the book to be honest. I was expecting some good stories and an average tale of working hard to achieve her position, but what she wrote was a strong story of struggle, adventure, drama, and suspense. If you are interested at all in internet culture or youth culture, for that matter, this is a powerful book that tells the story of one of the earliest pioneers. She provides great insight from the inside of internet stardom—what is true and what is not. I can’t recommend her book any stronger.
