This year when we moved to Fort Leavenworth, I had to finally buy a lawn mower. I have never bought a lawn mower. We had never needed one until we moved here. Because of deployments, yard difficulty, and time away at work—it has always made better sense to hired the mowing out to someone more capable than I. Then we arrived here. We have a very small yard (about a tenth of an acre or less), and I am only required to mow about half of that. So, I had to break down and buy a mower.
Doing a brief look online and then a visit to the local Lowe’s store, I settle on the Earthwise Reel Mower. My father once told me how good the reel mowers were—how they are better for the environment and chop up the grass, and how they make the lawn look better. My only concern was how hard they were to work. I really didn’t want to fool with gas. I also didn’t want to fool with bagging. But, I definitely didn’t want to deal with the noise of a powered mower. I was convinced that the Reel Type mower was the mower for me.
After I bought, assembled, and walked out to the lawn with my mower, I took it for my first run around the yard. Within seconds of mowing, I knew that I had definitely made the right choice. The mower is quiet, smooth, and cut amazingly well and even. I actually was enjoying the walk around my lawn. I also didn’t spend a long time either. I doubled back over each of my lines because the grass was longer than desired before I cut it, but that really didn’t take much extra time at all. I was also able to get a little bit of exercise while I was pushing. MY mowing has now become something I look forward to.
So my pick of the week is old school. Way old school!! Reach back and pick up a reel mower!
