The other night, I was in the same room as a young person who was watching a Disney Channel program. I wasn’t paying that much attention, but understood that it was probably one of the standard pre-teen shows that they offer. I’m not particularly hyper-critical of Disney’s programming so I am sure that the show was appropriate for the twelve year old that was in the room.
There was, however, a moment that my ears perked up. I heard a voice on the TV, which grabbed my attention. It was a teen girl who said: “I once burped in church and I was so embarrassed.”
Now, that may not seem like that big of a deal, but it was a big deal to me.
Disney is not a religious organization. Of course, it is a secular one. Secular writers, probably not Christian.
So why would “burping in Church” be so embarrassing?
I see here an example of what secular people are looking for. They understand the sacredness of church. They understand that the Church is a place of respect and of refinement. It needs to be a safe place, a reverent place, a place to meet God.
Churches are becoming farther and farther from this. They are becoming places that pride themselves at being low key, shorts wearing, coffee drinking, and drum beating places to “rock out.”
If you want that; go to a bar.
Let the Church be a place of reverence. Let it be a place to rediscover the Holy.
And let it be a place where burping twelve year old girls will be embarrassed.

Thank you for saying that! We’ve lost sight of what church is really about.
