I grew up listening to country music and I still love it. One of my favorite country songs was performed by John Conlee, titled Common Man. The song’s chorus expressed what it was like to be common. John Conlee sang:
“I’m just a common man, drive a common van. My dog ain’t got a pedigree. If I have my say it’s gonna stay that way. ‘Cause high-browed people lose their sanity. And a common man is what I’ll be.”
There is something about being common. We can all relate and we can all understand. We have all been in those same places, or ones like them. That is what it means to be common.
The Bible also mentioned another way we are all common. We are all common because all of us are sinners. In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, he writes:
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV)
There is one thing about sin; we are all sinners. It is common. While that should not lessen the severity of sin or the seriousness we should take it, the fact that sin is common gives us a common understanding. It also leaves us without an excuse. If no sin is uncommon, there have been those before us that did not allow temptation to overtake us. God is faithful and will provide a way out, if we will look it.
