There are times when young Soldiers get into trouble and they come to me ask about what to do. It is during those times, that I advise the Soldier to come clean to the commander and confess the truth. This helps the Soldier to ease his conscience and to not get into more trouble by covering the offense up. Covering things never makes things get better—trust me.
This same truth can be applied to our Christian lives as well. We are all sinners. As being the sinners that we are, we have sinned. When we do, this is the time to come clean and confess the true. In First John, Chapter 1, John gives interestingly similar advice. He begins is verse 8 by saying:
“If we say, “We have no sin,” we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” (1 John 1:7-8, HCSB)
Many times this passage is used in evangelism to discussed our need to understand the sin in our life. Honestly, this passage is written to Christians, so another way to consider this passage is by thinking through our need to “come clean”. If you say that you have not sinned—you are lying to yourself and God. Covering it up only makes things harder. However,
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9, HCSB)
We have a God who loves us and is faithful to forgive us. So come clean and confess your sin to him today. Be completely honest and he will forgive you and cleanse you. That is his promise to you.
