Donner’s return to the Superman story has brought back a fantastic villian that has been over looked. General Zod is a character that has an enormous amount of untapped potential. While I am not an expert on Superman history, I do not know of any time the Zod story has made it into the mainline Superman comics. There is the possibility that bringing Zod into the mix has been off-limits because of possible legal agreements, but also the reluctance to incorporate movie subjects into the comic books. Superman has a history of bringing idea from the big screen or small screen into the story in the past. Now is the time for General Zod.Â
I found it actually a nice touch for Kubert to reflect back to the movie Zod for his artwork in the Action Comics #846. There are little details that remind me of the movie and bring the story up to date. There is much in this book that reflect back on Superman II. I am impressed that Kubert set his creativity aside to capture what the reader would remember and think that the story should look like. This shows humility and the true desire to tell the story, rather than making a name for himself.
The Reintroduction of General Zod into the Superman story is a needed and welcomed move on the part of the editors of Action Comics.
