Several years ago as the company Google was in its infancy the company developed the motto: “Don’t Be Evil”. While at first, people loved this motto, slowly people began to use the motto as a tool to take shots at the company. These episodes prove the point that turning away from evil is much easier said than done.
The Bible teaches;
“Turn away from evil and do good; so shall you dwell forever.” (Psalm 37:27, ESV)
This is the basic practice of repentance. Going one way and turning toward another. But, in our fallen world, it is nearly impossible. This is one of the reasons that Google faced such opposition about their motto. The biggest question, I think, they faced is the same question that we all must face. We must ask the question of “What is Evil?”
If Evil is what public opinion says is evil, then we will always be seeking out the answer to a constantly shifting standard. But if you base your definition on a set definition, then you will be firm.
If you place your definition of evil as defined by the Bible, you will live forever.
Evil is sin. Sin is anything you think, say, or do that disobeys God. We are to turn away from evil—all evil, and do good.
No, this isn’t the easy path. It is easier said than done. But, as we turn away from evil and do good—we will dwell forever.
The path to forever begins with turning. Turning from this evil world and turning towards God.
Have you turn toward God today?
