About ten years ago, I was pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Radio and Television from Tri-County Technical College. I briefly had in mind that I would work at a church as a media minister. It is interesting to see now that the choice possibly would have been a good career track given the role that media is beginning to play in churches. This plan changed when I was able to reenter the Army as a Chaplain. I dropped out of the program to spend that Fall focusing on preparation to enter the Army, but mainly to go fishing with my Dad as much as possible. That decision I never regret. Though, at times I wish I had been able to finish the degree. I would have not been able to complete the program during that semester due to my report date being half way through the school year.
While I was at Tri-County Tech, I had an opportunity to work with ESPN at a Clemson game. I played the role of a grip—which means I held the wire behind the camera man and made sure the wire did not get tangled or stepped. The best part of the experience was that I was able to be a part of the television crew during a national broadcast. I think back on that chance of a lifetime many times when I enter a football stadium or any other place that is being televised.
About a year later, or so, I guess my name was still on the ESPN roster when ESPN sent me a hat to wear when I worked with them. I have never had another chance to work with them again, but I will keep the hat close just in case they need my services!
