On Monday, 24 August 2015, One Billion users visited Facebook.com in a single day. (Adweek/SocialTimes) People may not really understand the impact of this number, so let me give some other figures to compare.
Based on figures from InternetWorldStats.com, the three largest countries in the world are China (1.36 Billion), India (1.25 Billion), and The United States (321 Million). Another figure from Statista.com’s analysis, states that Facebook has 1.49 Billion active users. The logical conclusion is that if the users of Facebook were a country it would represent the world largest. Last Monday’s figure demonstrates that one billion of these users are truly active and all showed up for one single day.
The impact of that day is very significant. So much so, I am not even sure I can even fathom its importance. Facebook is the future. Many people will try to attack it. Many people will try to compete against it. In our changing world, there is no guarantee that Facebook will be around for the long haul—I’m sure no one knows this better that the leadership of Facebook. However, the fact remains that Facebook is the number one outlet in social media. Furthermore, this event truly makes the statement that social media is no longer a trend is be shrugged off. Social media is the future. While Christian may desire to ignore its existence and point to social media as the roots of many evils in our world, we must understand that the communication of the future is social media. Therefore, I believe, the future of evangelism, church growth, and world missions is in social media. What we do with it and how we handle it will determine how well we communicate the gospel to our world.
