Hurricane Ignacio was determined to be a Category 1 Hurricane by the Central Pacific Hurricane Center at 1100 AM on 28AUG15, HST
Tropical Storm Erika was determined to remain classified as a Tropical Storm following the 8 PM EDT by the National Hurricane Center.
There are two storms approaching the United States this evening. While, I hope neither one makes landfall, the possibility for two storms to hit the United States is a possibility. It is interesting to consider the preparations that FEMA is making to be ready for both storms to make landfall.
Thankfully, neither storm is classified as a major hurricane, but the damage potential should not be ignored. A topical system can bring flooding waters and winds that can damage homes and take lives. Those in the threat area should monitor both of these storms.
I saw news reports of Florida’s Emergency Operation Center (EOC) getting operation to begin preparation for the storm, and I am sure, if not already, Hawaii’s EOC will be operational soon. I am impressed by the way the EOC along with FEMA have a natural rhythm for getting the operational ball rolling. One of the things many people discuss at some of the trainings is the aging populations that have experience with these types of potential and actual disasters. The time period of the last major landfall is several years ago and during the time sense, many of the senior players have retire or moved to new positions. It is critical that we maintain a well-trained group of Emergency Managers and staff to be able to respond to the crisis needs. This is particularly true when there are two storms approaching at the same time.
