While walking on the trails at the Pocahontas State Park, Will and I approached the sign below and began exploring around a couple of feet off the trail to find the above picture.
The sign on the trail reads:
Clue: Open areas, ruins, grave stones, unusual vegetation (periwinkle, cedars, walnut trees, yucca plants, daffodils)
Major Event: Thirteen homes sites and 18 cemeteries have been identified in the park. Most date back to the 19th century. In the 1800s, Patrick Gill and his wife Julia lived at the home site in front of you. Julia’s daughter Fannie died in childbirth in 1872; and Fannie and her infant daughter are buried nearby.
What’s happening now: The site is slowly reverting back to forest, although the unusual vegetation will persist for years to come.
