As the light on my radio scanner lit up this morning, I began to hear a paramedic speaking very calmly to the hospital regarding his patient’s status. This is fairly routine and I hear it nearly every time I turn on my scanner.
This morning’s call was a little different. During the entire call the patient was screaming hysterically in the background. The paramedic was not getting excited—probably working to speaker calmer, with each message he sent. I was amazed as I listened. I was getting anxious as I was simply listening in. The paramedic demonstrated great patience and care during a chaotic situation.
I have great respect for the Fire Department and the EMTs or Paramedics across the country; but this morning reminded me of the patience that they can bring during crazy situations. I have even greater respect after listening to this call for I don’t see what the roll into. I only hear the calls. I don’t see the scene, I just listen to their response on the way to the hospital.
With their calm and quiet professionalism, these rescue personnel bring a peace to many situations when other would simply fall apart. This patience is brought about through discipline. It would be easy to let their emotions get the best of them and lose control of the situation. It would be easy to walk away a quit. It would be easy to get angry at the patient. But no; these emergency workers stay calm control the scene through pure discipline.
The true question for us is; how do we handle the stress we find ourselves in?
