Yesterday, Us Weekly reported that Reese Witherspoon was hit by a car while running. The incident reminds me of one of my pet-peeves.
When I saw the headline, my first thought was—“I bet she was wearing headphones.” And when I opened the link and saw a recent picture of her (above) running with earphones…I began to wonder and to once again desire to make my voice know regarding headphones.
To be fair, I don’t know if headphones played any part in the accident, but it does offer the opportunity to use this example as a way of encouraging others NOT to wear headphones when running.
I see people running or walking on busy streets and on roads with ear phones. I like to listen to my ipod while I run (especially when I have something to listen to). However, I either use earphones on the treadmill or the track—I may try to use it on the trail one day (but doesn’t that defeat the purpose of running on a trail for peace and quiet?).
Earphones should not be used on the street—period. You could get yourself killed. When people have their earphones on, they can not hear as well—they are not as aware of what is going on around them. Instead of having 360 degree sound to help, one must rely on one way vision to protect you from hazards. This goes for runners and for walkers—the same is true for both. I emphasize runners because I see happen with runners more.
So, while you run on the street—pay attention to what is going on around you, take the earphones out, and be safe!
