I don’t read fiction as much as I should, because when I do, I really enjoy it. My favorite fiction books are those related to the Star Trek Universe. It is not the most intellectual genre, but that is why I enjoy them. The last Star Trek book I read was “Rise of the Federation: A Choice of Futures (Star Trek: Enterprise Book 15)”, by Christopher L. Bennett. While reading about the troubles The Federation was having establish itself in the years following the series Star Trek: Enterprise, a statement was in the book that really captured what I feel about many things going on in our world.
In the book, the president of the Federation, President Thomas Vanderbilt, said;
“In this complicated, mysterious galaxy, with so much out there we can’t assume we understand or know how to cope with . . . knowledge will be our best defense. We need to move beyond our wartime mentality and become explorers again.”
In our post-9-11 world, we face many military threats. Yes, they need to be addressed, but what is going to move us as a country forward is first a return to Christ, but second is our willingness to explore. To some degree, this means a mission to Mars. We need to become explorers again. We need to rediscover risk and adventure. We need to pursue something other than our own greed. We need to work as a team, focused on one goal, not constantly looking for ways to be against one another.
We need to explore.
