Today, July 24, 2015, is National Drive Thru day. This problem is…I really hate going through the drive thru. I am a walk through the door person.
Why don’t I like the drive thru? I just don’t like “talking to the clown”. “Talking to the clown” is a statement I picked up somewhere along the way which probably refers to the first drive thru hamburger restaurant, Jack in the Box. The image in my mind is of driving up to a creepy clown head and placing your order several times and when you get to the window, the order is still wrong. I know that is an exaggeration. The orders aren’t always wrong and people really do like the service. People like the service so much that McDonald’s is adding an extra lane to speed up the service at their drive thru. But, I really don’t like talking to the clown.
Do I use the drive thru? Yes, I do if I have to. Sometimes I will do drive thru at Sonic or Starbucks for a drink. But, most of the time if my wife, Monica, is with me, I ask her to talk to the clown even if I’m driving. I agree that the drive thru is a helpful and primarily efficient ordering system for restaurants. But, I wish they would develop a better way to order. So, to celebrate National Drive Thru Day by asking Monica to pick up an online order from Applebee’s.
