I remember the day when men and women in the military wore uniforms any time they were off base or ship. It was so nice to see. I would like to see that today.
To be honest, I agree–I like to see uniforms out and about in public. However, there are some very good reasons for not wearing uniforms of post.
First is the safety of the Soldiers. Of course, not everybody is as happy to see a Soldier as you are. I actually think this policy started during and after Vietnam, when it was clear there were people who would be happy to show their violent displeasure to the Soldier that they would see.
Second is the safety of the people around them. Many times Soldiers must take public transportation. Having a Soldier in uniform only places a target on the vehicle that they are in. In an age of terrorism it is easy to see why.
Thank you, Gail, for your comments, I hope this helps to understand a little more about our world.

Thank you for your kind words.
I will tell you that when I have and my ACU’s on in public every body was very supportive and respectful. One major comment I neglected to add was the terrorist threat. Outside post with a uniform on set a Soldier up to be a target. So that’s another reason. Thank you again!!

What a sad commentary of where our society is going that a man or woman in uniform recieves so much disrespect! I have always known that I wouldn’t have the life I do without the US military. This was brought home to me with amazing force during a recent visit to the WWII landing beaches in Normandy, France. I understand that the people serving in the military today are not the same people who fought in WWII, but aren’t they serving for the same reasons – to keep me safe anf free? How can anyone who understands that NOT respect someone who puts on the uniform everyday. And I’d prefer to stand next to anyone in uniform on any corner or on and train or bus. Who is better equipped/trained to protect me? 🙂 You and your colleagues have my upmost respect for the job you have chosen to do, for me, my children, and the rest of the USA!
