Last Friday, as I was driving to the zoo to take pictures, I came to a stop light next an old Corvette “Stingray.” I could hear its motor running—which didn’t sound as if it were in the best shape. I also saw the rusted body of the car—which had seen better days.
As I thought about this care, I reflected on what it once was. I thought about the hours the owner worked to save enough to buy his dream car. I thought about the polish and care the owner once put in the car to keep it looking good for all to see. Somewhere along the way the car was neglected. Possibly the upkeep became so expensive or the time require became too much. Regardless of the reason, this once showroom quality Corvette was now a bucket of bolts.
I then thought about the treasures of our lives. We put so much of our time and energy into them. We work so hard to maintain them. But, eventually, all things fade away and become a bucket of bolts.
I thought of this more in Sunday School while we were taught from 1 Peter 1:24-25, which reads:
for
“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
(1 Peter 1:24-25 ESV)
Isn’t time we put our energies into things that are eternal?
