This week in the “Social Times” by Adweek, there was a post titled “Personalization Boosts App Engagement“. In the post there was the emphasis on “personalization” and how that effects engagement. As I read the article, I was reminded about how important personalization is when it comes to Christian and Church Social Media.
When it comes to Christian engagement on Social Media, I believe that we must become experts in doing what Social Media does well, and that is “Social”. Our mission is to engage, not simply to advertise or to announce. One of the biggest tools to engagement is personalization. Everyone wants someone to call them by name. Everyone wants someone to be interested in them. Everyone wants their questions answered, their prayers prayed for, their concerns heard, and their heart aches comforted. Personalization on Social Media can be a tool to make this happen and Christians need to be leading the way. While Christians also must be the first to protect someone’s privacy, there are many ways that personalization can open the door to engagement with others.
Personalization can take different forms. It can be personalized tweets on Twitter using @mentions. It can also be replying to needs that are expressed on Twitter, Facebook, or any other platform. A reply to needs can be a word of encouragement or an offer to pray. Personalization can also be in the form of celebrating with followers as they mention the good things that are in life.
Personalization can bring a lot to the engagement we have with our world and Social Media can be a bridge to make that engagement happen.
