While I was deployed, an organization of volunteers from anysoldier.com helped me and my Soldiers tremendously through sending us hundreds of care packages. On their forum site, some of them would ask questions about what to send. I am turning some of these into blog posts so others can benefit from some of the information I posted. The group at anysoldier.com is a wonderful group to work with if you are looking to support our Soldiers downrange.
Another question regarding books was asked;
“Was just wondering if you might have use for the occasional Bible or book of a spiritual nature I find?”
My response was:
Thank you for asking about this–it is kind of important to me!! As a Chaplain, we have lots of Bibles. But, an occasional religious book is great! The Soldier really enjoy them and they don’t sit around very long. I believe that the Soldiers are hungry to have something to satisfy their soul. Yes, it is important that all religions are respected and that we don’t get in the business of proselytizing–but, the majority of Soldiers do consider themselves Christian or at least Spiritual…so these kinds of books are welcome.Â
The biggest problem I run into is when I get a box full of evangelistic “fire and brimstone” books that just sit on the shelf. Needs based books or even theological books are much better. Christian fiction is also welcomed.Â
 Another problem that I run into is when I get several boxes of one certain book that whoever is sending wants to promote. There are a lot of good things out there, but we run into a space issue if I get boxes and boxes of one book. If people are going to send a bulk shipment, it is best to coordinate this with a Chaplain.
I hope this helps.
Again, I have been very impressed with the people of anysoldier.com during my most recent tour in Iraq. If you are looking to support Soldiers downrange they are a good resource to use. And don’t forget all of the many other organizations represented through America Supports You, which is now associated with OurMilitary.mil.
