This week, I finished listening to Brene’ Brown’s “The Power of Vulnerability” speech series on Audible.com. The series is probably one of the best audible “books” that I have listened to this year. It is also one that I want to take the time to listen to again and again.
Dr. Brene’ Brown is a “Shame Researcher.” She researches the concept of shame and how it effects people and how to overcome shame in our lives. Interestingly enough, the solution for shame issues is vulnerability—that leads to whole heartedness. After listening to the presentation, I desperately wanted to hear more and I look forward to reading her books, which—thankfully—Monica has already bought.
Some of the biggest lessons learned, as I reflect back, were 1) the difference between shame and guilt, 2) a statement where she said, “Calm people breathe,” and 3) her focus on creativity and play. While, those three lessons are big enough, there are so many more that I missed and need to review. She truly makes the case that wholehearted living is worth the work to attain.
My biggest issue with the presentation is that she approaches from a secular point of view. While she is a Christian person, her approach and discussion—I believe—come from a secular scientific viewpoint. As I listened to her speech, I was gripped by the fact that by trusting in Christ and placing your value in Christ, you can open the door to true wholehearted living. Once you place your faith in Christ and your value in him, you can then know true wholeheartedness and he can remove your shame. With that said, however, every Pastor needs to listen to this presentation. It is invaluable in understanding what can bring meaning to our lives.
If you want a trial of audible.com and have one free book to listen to—this would be the one to get. Her presentation will definitely make a difference in your life.
