U.S. #7 presents some interesting elements to understanding recent Comic Book history.
The cover art style is a major change from what was happening in the rest of the comic book world at the time. The use of painting instead of the typical line sketches for the cover seems to be introduced during this time. I’ve noticed a similar change in the covers of New Teen Titans Volume Two.
I also think that the writers present an interesting, while probably not new, perspective of an object narrating the story. In this case the narrator is the U.S. 1 truck itself. I think this was a creative use of narration during this story and I believe that it is believable–until the Highwayman is named as responsible for making the truck have a mind of his own. The story was completely believable within the story until this point. It seems that the writers didn’t believe their own story.
I think I was given a good lesson in writing and comic book art history–simply by reading this comic book.
