We had winter weather last night. In some places in snowed, in others there was sleet. This morning there was ice everywhere.
On my way to preaching in chapel, I saw about ten wrecks along the road. On my way home, I was stuck in traffic from a wreck.
When winter weather hits, I’m one of the first to say; “Shut it down.” Really.
Now, I’ve lived all around the country and have learned to be able to drive in various different circumstances. But, I am still eager to say–“Shut it all down” when it comes to winter weather. I understand that some places in America have an abundance of winter weather and the area would shut down from October through April. However, I don’t live there.
I typically live in more Southern states where winter weather is a once or twice a year event. The residents are not prepared or experienced to drive in wintry conditions, nor are their local highway departments equipped to handle these storms. Would you want to use your tax money for a fleet of snow plows used once a year? There are no snow chains. There are no bags of ice for the sidewalks. We are simply not prepared.
And that’s OK. We should just shut it all down. Why not? Are businesses that critical that to lose one day of work the world will fall apart? Do we actually need to be in that big of a hurry to get to another place during a storm? How much of your hurry will be stopped if you plow into an obscured vehicle?
The next time you are in a storm. Stop and think, if you would be better off at home by the fireplace. I know I would be.
