One of the biggest time drains, is probably one of the most useful tools that I own. Through my smart phone, I can access the web, take photos, send messages to my wife, and talk to her across the time zones (it is a phone after all). It also has the ability to drain minutes, if not hours away from you.
The Bible says:
“For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies.” (2 Thessalonians 3:11, ESV)
While I don’t find the occasional “Surfing the internet” too much of a problem, I do see the habit on constantly spending idle time on the smart phone concerning.
Do we really want to live our lives scrolling through aimless (at best) or harmful or worse content on our smart phones? Is this the path to success? Is this how we want to spend our lives?
It was once so easy to come home and pick up the remote and become a zombie in front of the TV. Now, we can become a zombie anywhere with the smart phone in our pocket.
The following verse says;
“Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.” (2 Thessalonians 3:11, ESV)
The lesson is clear. Get to work!
Again, I am not against downtime. We need downtime. We need to rest.
What we do not need is the excessive, draining, lifestyle of idleness.
The remedy is getting back to work. Working quietly—not turning to another time waster of gossip. Simply working.
