One of the happy accidents that have come from social media is the habit of carrying a camera with me. I carry my iPhone with me primarily for a communications device, but it comes in handy that it has a camera imbedded inside. But, as I got more involved in Instagram, I had a desire to share some of the things that I was seeing with my friends.
This turned into a goal of sharing at least one photo every day. Taking one photo a day has given me the wonderful experience of capturing moments that I would never have taken if I did not try to take a photo every day. This experience built in me the habit of looking for photos and taking the photo.
From this, I have learned to keep a camera with me all of the time. As good as the iPhone camera is, the camera still is from a smart phone. There is a technically quality that you cannot get from a phone that you can get from a camera. So, while the iPhone is good enough for social media, there are more uses that you can have from using a real camera from printing and enlargements to making craft project or supporting my wife’s scrapbooking.
The important point is that I take a camera everywhere. I may not use it. However, I may miss a great opportunity for a photo if I don’t have the camera with me.
