Can I express to you that sometimes I feel completely out of place in this high-tech world we’ve become? I am fairly “digitally savvy”; I have been blogging and tweeting for over ten years, was an early adopter of ebooks until my Sony Reader got fried by the sun in Iraq, and use my iPhone for photography, life management, and video communication. However, I had a recent experience that made my take a double take.
I was talking to some friends in a conference room discussing different books we and reading, when one of the guys said; “Oh, I have that book on my phone but haven’t read it yet.” I squirmed a little. It is absolutely amazing to have a book downloaded into your phone that is about the size of an index card. Further, it is amazing how I was the only one that was stunned by someone having a book on his phone. He may have a bigger chance reading this said book if it was not on his phone!
The truth, however, is that I am from a different era. I know plenty of people who have books on their kindle app on their phone. They use these books to read in line, on the train, or just about anywhere. Many phones are also a little larger than mine. I am a child of the seventies. Of three channels, typewriters, and rotary dial telephones. This is simply how I grew up. I am just reminded now and then just how fast the world has changed.
