Red Robin #3 is an enjoyable piece of a larger growing story. As I watch Tim Drake search for Batman, he stands alone—except for some unusual allies. Great storytelling and straight forward art makes “The Grail, Part Three†a great issue. There is so much happening in the DC Universe it is exciting to follow the expanding mythology of Batman.
The role Tim Drake is going to play in the future hangs in the balance as, on one hand, he is the only one to express doubt about Batman’s death, and, on the other hand, he is slowly sliding away from the Batman code of ethics—becoming a criminal to discover the truth and making the ends justify the means. As I read this issue, I began to reminisce about the similarity to Cat Woman Red Robin takes in thievery and bold disregard for the law.
It was also interesting to me the conversation with Wonder Girl about dealing with the death of Batman. Grieving is a dramatic process—it is painful to watch others experience the grief that they bare. In this grief Tim sees something more—he sees that something truly isn’t right. He knows that Batman is still alive. It is more than denial, but instinct.
